A Ringgold county native will be part of the Expedition 5 crew to the International Space Station, and a number of
county residents are making plans to be on hand for the launch. Dr. Peggy WHITSON, daughter of Keith and Beth WHITSON
of Beaconsfield, will spend four months in space conducting experiments in human physiology, microgravity and space
product development. The trip will be a fulfillment of a life-long dream for Dr. WHITSON, who was selected as an astronaut
in 1996.
Martha FARIS of Mount Ayr is sending a quilt she made a few years ago as part of an effort to provide quilts for
each family who lost a loved one in the attacks in New York. Janet BARKER KNEDLER of Topeka, KS, daughter of Guelda BARKER
of Mount Ayr, is part of a "Flag of Remembrance" quilt project which also grew out of efforts at helping New Yorkers.
A Mount Ayr five-year-old will be donating some of her long air to the Locks of Love program, which provides hair pieces
to children who lose their hair because of cancer treatment. Lindsey Kay REASONER, daughter of Doug and Brenda REASONER
of Mount Ayr, will be donating 15 inches of her hair to the program.
Mount Ayr Community high school will be represented
by two wrestlers at the state tournament in Des Moines this week. Kevin TRULLINGER, wrestling at 150 pounds, and Blake
HAUGLAND, wrestling at 171 pounds, both won titles in their divisions at the district tournament in Truro Saturday to
advance.
A third place finish was awarded to the Mount Ayr Community high school jazz band at the Dick Bauman jazz
festival held at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs Saturday. Landi McFARLAND and Kyle FORD received
outstanding soloist certificates from the judges at the festival.
Two Ringgold county wrestlers have qualified to
compete with Team Iowa at the USA Nationals in Topeka, KS. Matt WIMER of Mount Ayr placed third and Chelsey HOSFIELD
of Blockton placed fifth in their weight class at the USA state wrestling tournament at Johnston February 9 to
qualify for the national event. WIMER is a seventh grader and HOSFIELD is a sixth grader.
A local athlete is a
member of the nationally ranked Central College men's golf team. Joe SCHAFER of Mount Ayr, a sophomore at
the college, is playing on the team again this year.
