Five farmers in Ringgold county have reported to th DeKalb Agricultural Association, Inc. of DeKalb, IL., outstanding yields in DeKalb's Five-Acre Yield Contest. The men, the variety planted and the yield per five acres are as follows: Lyle SWANK of Benton, 3X2, 152 bushels; Norman ELSWICK of Lamoni, 3X2, 139 bushels; W. F. BAKER of Kellerton, 3X3, 138 bushels; Frank VARNER of Kellerton, 856, 126 bushels; and, Bert GROSE of Kellerton, 3X1, 122 bushels. In DeKalb's Two Acre Junior Contest, K. E. HERREN of Kellerton produced 96 bushels per acre of the 3X1 variety.

LeRoy CREES of Beaconsfield and Joe DENHART of Mount Ayr have been selected as winners of two purebred gilts awarded annually by the Mount Ayr Lions Club. The two youths, Marvin LANE and Eugene RICKER were interviewed by the Lions Club Agriculture Committee and CREES and DENHART were chosen as the winners.

Mrs. Howard PAIST and the occupants of her car escaped injury Thursday monring when the 1951 Chrysler in which they were riding was struck in the rear by a 1956 Oldsmobile driven by William STRITE of Clarinda. Mrs. PAIST, traveling east on Highway Nos. 2 and 169, had stopped her car on Rose Hill Cemetery hill to allow westbound traffice to pass before she made a left turn when the accident happened. She was taking a carload of children to school.

An 18-year-old Ringgold county 4-H member, who has definitely decided that his future is on the farm, has been named one of Iowa's 31 delegates to the 37th National 4-H Club Congress to be held from November 30 to December 4 in Chicago, IL. The trip winner is James F. SMITH, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis SMITH, operators of a 400-acre farm south of Tingley. He will attend the Congress as state winner of the 4-H Community Service award program.

The United Food Market this week announces the 25th anniversary observance of the establishment of its store in Mount Ayr. The United store opened for business on November 11, 1933, in what was known as the WILSON building on the west side of the square under the management of Richard BARTON, an affable, energetic young man of only 19 years. BARTON proved his ability early in life and advanced to his present position of supervisor of all United stores.

  • November 17, a son, Donald Jay to Mr. and Mrs. Charles ZOLLMAN, Grant City MO
