RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, August 20, 1987

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

A pile of rubble was all that remained following a fire at the home of Gene and Ruth NOFTSGER of rural Kellerton Friday night. The two-story, 10-room home burned to the ground before anyone knew it was on fire. It was thought that lightning struck the home during the storm Friday night. The NOFTSGERS were visiting a daughter, Amy PODZIMEK, and her family in Cedar Rapids at the time of the fire. Terry MUNYON of Kellerton discovered the smouldering remains of the home when he went there about 7 a.m. Saturday morning to talk to the NOFTSGERS. MUNYON went to the Rex PAYTON home about a mile away and called Gail TRULLINGER of rural Mount Ayr, another daughter of the NOFTSGERS, who notified her parents. The NOFTSGERS had the clothes and belongings they had taken on their trip but lost all their other personal items in the fire.

Royalty were crowned during the Kellerton Fun Day celebration Saturday. Winners of the contests included princess Kim HAMBLIN, prince Matthew MUNYON, queen P.J. GEORGE and king Bob LEEPER.

Charles W. BENNETT, 27, son of Robert and Wanda BENNETT of rural Mount Ayr, was killed in a two-vehicle accident August 13 in Riverside, CA. Charles had been in California for two and one-half years where he had been working as an electrician at Superior Temporary Power Company in San Bernardino.

August 1, 1987, the Mount Ayr Mill and Feed observed a milestone -- 60 years in business in Mount Ayr in the original location and under the same family ownership. Max ANDERSON became sole owner and operator of the business in 1969 and was in partnership with his father, J. M. ANDERSON for 11 years prior to that.

Three young women from district 18 of the Cattlemen and Cattlewomen Associations were candidates for district beef queen in competition, August 13, at the Osceola Country Club. Kris RICHARDS, daughter of Doyle and Connie RICHARDS of rural Tingley, was named district beef princess. She reigns until this fall as the Ringgold county beef queen, which made her eligible to represent the county in the competition. She has enrolled as a freshman at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO and is a 1987 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school.

Emmanuel GELINEAU, 15, of Paris, France, arrives August 4 for a one-month say in the home of Mr. and Mrs. David BARKER of rural Diagonal and their family.
