RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, March 19, 1953

Veronica Ray, Mount Ayr

The Record-News force encountered mechanical difficulties which explains why the county paper was printed and circulated one day late this week. Several teeth in a cogwheel on the press were broken. Harold DAVIS and Charlie TRIMBLE came to the rescue and now the paper is back in production.

Boyd ETHINGTON of Athens township was the successful candidate for the position of member of the county board of education from Area No. 1 E.M. WATSON and John D. WARIN were unopposed as candidates to succeed themselves from Area No. 2 and 3, respectively.

Mrs. Herman FENNEMA was elected president of the board of education of the Independent School District of Mount Ayr Monday night. FENNEMA has served as director for one year.

Gene HANNON of Mount Ayr, who graduated in January from the Northwest Missouri State College at Maryville, MO and was immediately employed as coach in Jefferson high school at Conception Junction, MO, has in six weeks time made an enviable record with his boy's basketball team, when they copped first-place honors in the sub-regional tournament.

Four young men went Wednesday to Des Moines in response to Induction Call No. 35. They were Donald C. HAYES of Stanton, formerly of Delphos; Lloyd Junior SCHOFIELD of Lenox; Clinton V. ANDERSON of Ellston; and Benjamin C. TEALE of Lamoni.

Ringgold cunty rural carriers, members of the Ladies' Auxiliary and Diagonal postal employees gathered in the basement of the Christian church March 10 for a retirement party honoring James W. CARSON, who completed 29 years as rural carrier from the Diagonal office.

It was a happy bunch of boys and fans who swarmed out on Ottumwa's large gym floor Friday night at the state basketball tournament for the first time in 21 years. The Raiders turned back Bloomfield 53-52 for their 24th triumph of the year. Dave CULVER threw in 26 points to pace his team. Then Mount Ayr stopped Pella's Dutchmen whipping them 62 to 50 on Wednesday night, advancing them to the final round.

BIRTHS REPORTED FROM RINGGOLD COUNTY HOSPITAL:

  • March 12, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Claudie SCOTT, Parnell MO

Transciption by Sharon R. Becker, August of 2012
