Twenty-five
years of law enforcing will end with the retirement, on March 1, 1987, of Laverne WORTHINGTON, chief deputy sheriff
in Ringgold county. The same types of crimes are still being repeated,but the big change in the last five years has been
the increased number of foreclosures and papers he has had to serve, the veteran lawman observes.
Three Diagonal Community
high school students have been named as winners in the "Employ Iowa Teens in Iowa" poster contest, sponsored by the Youth
Education, Employment and Training Task Force. Jacque HOWER daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick HOWER, will receive $75 for
second place in the 11th and 12th grade division. The Diagonal art students also took second and third place in the
ninth and 10th grade with Eddie ALLEE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed ALLEE receiving $75 for second and Chad AUSTIN, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Tom AUSTIn, receiving $50 for third.
Valentine's Day means special activities at the congregate meal sites in Ringgold county and Friday, Feb.
13, was no different this year as royalty was chosen at both at the Mount Ayr and Tingley meal sites. King and queen
chosen from the senior citizens at Mount Ayr were Carol Van PATTON and Pearl MAY. Valentine king and queen at Tingley
were Margaret and Oka BETHARDS of Tingley, who will celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary March 17.

Mount Ayr was a member of one of the placing livestock judging teams at the Sioux Empire Farm Show collegiate
live-stock judging contest held recently in Sioux Falls, SD. ISU teams finished first, ninth and 12th in the contest
out of a total of 19 teams and 107 individuals.
Three Mount Ayr Community Raider wrestlers advanced to thedistrict
wrestling tournament the Raiders are hosting Saturday with first or second place finishes in the sectional tournament
at East Union this week. Max TRIGGS took the title at 138 pounds and Cody SHAY and Kevin O'MAILIA placed second at 119
and 167 pounds, respectively, to earn places in the districts.
Jamie TAYLOR, 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Steve TAYLOR of Mount Ayr, won rookie of the year in the barrel racing event in the Iowa Rodeo Cowboys Association
recently. She competed in 12 rodeos last summer to win the award.
Doug HEWLETT, 21-year-old student from Grand River,
is serving a 12-week internship with Jim MAPES, a cutting horse trainer, as part of his horse training and management
program at Lamar Community College in Lamar, CO. The internship culminates a two-year course of study in health,
foot care, nutrition, management and marking of horses and includes a minimum of five laboratory experiences in breaking
and training of young horses.
David RICHARDS, representing the Mount Ayr Lions Club, presented the Lions Club trophies
for outstanding 4-H Club work to Patty TAYLOR of Diagonal and Kelly HENSLEY of Mount Ayr.

new beauty shop, Cathy's, was held this week.
