A replica of the Liberty Bell and a mock-up of an Honest John rocket will be on display in Mount Ayr on Monday, May 28. The display will be exhibited in 50 Iowa counties to promote Iowa's "Freedom Bond" drive.

Phyllis HALL of Kellerton assumed her duties as stenographer in the Record-News office. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ira HALL of Athens township. Miss HALL succeeds Mrs. Kay (Judy BECK) HUFF, who was an efficient employee for 15 months while her husband served with the U.S. Air Force in Turkey.

The board of education of the Mount Ayr Community school district has signed a contract with Jerry L. PAYNE of Hamburg to teach high school general science during the 1962-63 term.

Mrs. Donald DAILEY was elected president of the Parent-Teacher Association of the Mount Ayr Community schools during a meeting held last week.

Twenty-three Cub Scouts of Pack 65, Mount Ayr, were privileged to attend the Shrine Circus Saturday in Des Moines, through the generosity of F. B. MALOY and W. T. TIMBY, Shriners, who provided tickets for the occasion.

Phillip DRAKE, a freshman in the Mount Ayr Community high school, won first place honors in the Ringgold Soil Conservation District speech contest held Monday afternoon in Mount Ayr. Phillip is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond DRAKE of Mount Ayr. David BARKER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence BARKER of Benton, placed second and David UMBARGER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond UMBARGER of Mount Ayr, finished third. BARKER is a junior and UMABARGER a freshman in the Mount Ayr schools.

The 38-acre farm of the late Joseph A. McQUIGG and Edna McQUIGG, located at the northeast edge of Mount Ayr on Highway 169, was sold Saturday at public auction to Doyle BAKER for $6,500.The farm had been in the McQUIGG family since February 18, 1894. The sale was conducted by Roy SWARTZ, executor; Frank F. WILSON, attorney,and Jack and Raymond HUTCHINSON, auctioneers.

The appointment of Mrs. Helen STREEBIN as extension assistant in Ringgold county, effective June 4, has been announced by the Iowa State University Cooperative Extension Service and Ringgold County Extension Council. Mrs. STREEBIN is the mother of four married children -- two sons and two daughters. She will establish a residence in Mount Ayr on June 1.

At a special election held Saturday, the voters of Beaconsfield overwhelmingly approved the granting of a franchise to the Iowa State Telephone Corporation for a period of 35 years.
