Veronica Ray, Mount Ayr/Chanse Hall

Erin BARKER of rural Diagonal was named the winner of the Mount Ayr Community high school drama club's fine arts achievement award at the annual fine arts banquet Saturday night.

RAGBRAI XX will be coming through Mount Ayr July 21, and work is progressing to prepare for the on-slaught. Mount Ayr has been designated a meeting point for support crew and cyclists, so more than just the 8,000 or so riders will be coming through. "Peddlin' and Pipin' in the Ayr" will be the theme for the Mount Ayr visit and other details of the visit are being organized.

Teri KRAMER ROKUSEK, a 1981 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school, has been named a Gold Star teacher. ROKUSEK, a second grade teacher at Orchard Hill elementary school in Cedar Falls, was chosen as one of the 10 teachers in Black Hawk county for the award.

Marine Lance Cpl. Jeffrey l. COOPER, son of Jerry L. and Judy K. COOPER of Tingley and a 1988 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school, recently reported for duty with 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Force Service Support Group, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, CA.

For the second year in a row, Diagonal students brought home the trophy for first place at the Green Valley Area Education Agency speech/play contest for fifth and sixth graders and seventh and eighth graders. Division I rating went to seventh grade speeches by Jennifer SCHLAPIA on "Paris" and Becky LUMBARD on "Edgar Allen Poe." Stephanie FLETCHER spoke on "humpback whales" and Zach GUNSOLLEY spoke on "pyramids" to recieve sixth grade speech Division I ratings.

A total of 60 persons attended the Diagonal prom "Everyything I Do, I Do It For You" held recently. Amy SCHAEFER and Corey CASTEEL wre selected as prom queen and king this year.

Jared TRULLINGER, son of Steve and Gail TRULLINGER, placed 19th at the state sixth grade math contest at Fort Dodge.
