A volunteer fire department has been organized in the town of Tingley following the purchase of a motor-driven pump,
which has been mounted on a truck with a 550-gallon tank and attached hose. Men listed on the roster of the fire
department are Cyril GREENE, chief; Don KINNE, Charles JACKSON, Dean JOHNSON, Billy BRECKENRIDGE, Dean BRECKENRIDGE,
Allyn JARRED, Marvin HALM, Ed SHERWOOD, Arthur PRITCHARD, Carl RIGGS and Harold GROUT. The department is desirous of
raising $300, the amount necessary for the purchase of a smoke mask, and any good ideas on how the money can be obtained
will be gratefully received by the members.
Special awards were presented to 23 students at the State University of Iowa's annual dental convocation held Thursday
evening in Macbride Auditorium in Iowa City. Dan STEELE, son of Mrs. Pat CARR of Maloy and the late Hugh STEELE, received
one of six Omicrom Kappa Upsilon awards given for scholarship by the national honorary dental society.
Mrs. Iven EARLY suffered a fractured hip Tuesday when she fell at her home in Redding. She is a patient in the Ringgold
County Hospital.
While hanging clothes on the line at her home in east Mount Ayr on Monday morning, Mrs. Melvin LEWIS experienced a
fainting spell, fell and fractured her left hip and shoulder. She was taken to the Ringgold County Hospital.
Fifteen upper classmen at Iowa State University, Ames, have been awarded $100 scholarships for the 1962-63 school year
through a supplemental grant. Among the group is John T. PETERSEN, sciences and humanities student, and son of Mr. and
Mrs. Carl F. PETERSEN of this city.
Patty STEPHENS won top honors in the Better Groomed Girl Contest held Friday morning in the school auditorium in Mount
Ayr. The daughter of Mrs. Gayland STEPHENS of Diagonal and a member of the Washington Workers 4-H Club for six years,
Patty is representing Ringgold county in the Better Groomed Girl Contest being held this week in Ames in conjunction with
the Iowa State 4-H conference.
Mary Sue BASTOW, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob BASTOW of Mount Ayr and a member of the Liberty Belles 4-H Club, placed
second and Marie ANGUS of the Clover Belles 4-H Club and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd ANGUS of Mount Ayr won third
place honors.
Willey's Plumbing and Heating of this city has been designated as the new Kelvinator dealer for Mount Ayr and its trade
territory.
The annual Kids' Fish Day held Sunday afternoon at the Lions Club Lake, north of Mount Ayr, under the sponsorship of the
Ringgold County Sportsmen's Club, attracted approximately 300 boys and girls, 16 years of age and younger.
Don MORRELL, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don F. FORRELL of Grand River, was chosen by the American
Legion Post of Grand River to attend Hawkeye Boys Statet at Camp Dodge.
Bob ROE of this city and Jack HART of Seymour announce the purchase of a Skelly gasoline and oil jobber business located
on Highway 63 in north Kirksville, MO. Possession will be given in the near future. They have also purchased affiliated
businesses in Centerville and Columbia, MO. Mr. ROE and Mr. HART, both International Harvester dealers, have been
friends for 12 years.
