Two first place
plaques were received by the Mount Ayr Record-News in the 2002 Better Newspaper Contests sponsored by the Iowa
Newspaper Foundation. The winners of the contests were announced at the annual convention of the Iowa Newspaper
Association held in Des Moines last week. The Mount Ayr Record-News received first place in the spot news story
competition and the best advertisement featuring grocery items contest. The paper competes in the Class II division
for weekly newspapers with circulations between 1,401 and 2,649.
The first place news award came for the coverage
of the tornado tha tblew through Ringgold county in April. The issue with the coverage of the tornado was one of the
most well received issues of the paper in several years.
A second-degree murder trial of Pamela S. FOLEY, 41, of
Ridgeway, MO, has been postponed after FOLEY hired a new attorney. FOLEY is charged in the death of her estranged
husband, Larry WHITE, in November 2000 at her Rock House Lake home near Ridgeway, MO. WHITE was a former Mount Ayr
resident. WHITE was shot to death with a small-caliber weapon at the house early in November 2000. His body was
recovered in early December from a well on a farm west of Eagleville, MO.
Dr. Doug SMITH, M.D., was recently hired
as a part-time family practice physician for the Mount Ayr Medical Clinic. SMITH saw his first patients Monday.
Two Mount Ayr Community Raiders will be taking part in the district wrestling tournament Saturday at Truro, hosted
by Interstate 35. Blake HAUGLAND at 171 pounds will be working to make a repeat trip to the state tournament and
Kevin TRULLINGER at 215 pounds will be seeking to make his first trip there after winning titles at the sectional
tournament.
It's on to the Class 1A district girls basketball final for the Diagonal Maroonettes. The girls
defeated Villisca 44-32 in Villisca Monday night to advance to the district final Saturday night. The game
against Lenox will be played at Lenox. A win over Lenox would give the girls the district title and put them
in a regional semifinal against the winner of East Union and Murray played Saturday night.
