Fires destroyed three buildings in Ringgold county this last week and kept area firemen busy in the early morning hours.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Elton WERNER of rural Diagonal was completely destroyed in a blaze early last Thursday
morning, a barn on the Wesley JONES farm near Redding was destroyed in a blaze early Saturay morning, and ROUTH'S Diesel Shop
on the Main Street in Diagonal was gutted by a blaze early Tuesday morning.
A Mount Ayr Community elementary school student was injured in a car-pedestrian accident near the school Tuesday
morning. Jennifer FARIS, seven, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee FARIS of Mount Ayr, was hit as she crossed the street
on the north side of the Mount Ayr community elementary school at approximately 8:30 a.m.
For the first time in the history of Mount Ayr Community high school, a student artist has been named a national winner
in the scholastic art awards contest. A pencil drawing by MACHS senior George HUNT was awarded honorable mention
in the national competition, the latest in a series of recognitions HUNT has received for his art work. The award
winning drawing is of a corn sheller, one of the array of intriguing still-life objects collected in the art room
at the high school here.
Monte STARLIN of Tingley won his weight division in the national Monster Arm Wrestling championships in Ames
Saturday. STARLIN, who had been arm wrestling for about three years. won the "Super Fly" division of the tournament
for arm wrestlers 135 pounds or lighter.
Lyle WALTERS, who for 22 years has farmed in the Kellerton vicinity, and his wife, Barbara WALTERS, branch
manager of First Federal Savings and Loan in Mount Ayr, will be moving to Paris, TX. Barb's mother, Mrs. Helen LONG,
will be going with them.
Jim DUNCAN, the voice of the Drake Relays, urged athletes to reach for the stars at the annual Mount Ayr Community high school
sports banquet at the Mount Ayr Community high school Friday. DUNCAN shared stories about people who have overcome
problems to succeed.
