Governor Terry BRANSTAD will be in Ringgold county Wednesday, Sept. 2, as part of his 99-county "Thank You, Iowa" tour
as he marks 16 years as Iowa's longest-serving chief executive. BRANSTAD was elected to his first term in 1982 at
age 35, the youngest governor in Iowa history. He is currently the senior governor of the United States.
Coral and Gene SMITH of Mount Ayr are hosting a youth hostel in a Methodist church in Ketchlikan, AK this summer.
The hostel, in the church basement, provides a place for travelers to have an inexpensive place to stay.
A Redding girl has been selected as a state finalist in the Miss Iowa American Coed Pageant to be held September
5-7 at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Des Moines. Trenae LONETTI, 11, daughter of Frank and Marcia LONETTI of Redding,
will be competing in the contest. The pageant is held for girls ages three through 17, with competition in
various age divisions.
Three area residents had placings in the Iowa Games annual sports festival, according to information released this
week by games officials. Chad KINGERY of Mount Ayr placed second in the mini peewee division of the Tae Kwon Do
competition. Jason SMITH of Diagonal placed first in the 3-D archery event for youth 13-16. Joshua SHIELDS of
Grand River placed second in the 300 meter hurdles race in a time of 1:02:14.
Two Mount Ayr Community high school baseball players received all-state honorable mention on the Iowa Newspaper
Association's all-state team announced recently. Named as honorable mention pitchers were MACHS Danny NELSON and
Brandon YODER.
