A devasting fire that swept through the east side of the business district in downtown Mount Ayr early Monday
evening completely gutted two businesses and caused considerable smoke and water damage to adjacent buildings. Mount
Ayr firemen fought the fast-moving fire for four hours and contained the blaze that caused an estimated half-million
dollars in damage to the Gambles Store, the dental offices of Drs. C. Collus and Charles W. LAWHEAD and to the McNeiley
Drug Store. The 65,000 gallon Mount Ayr water tower was drained during the course of the evening and additional water
from tankers was provided to control the blaze.
Paul V. HART, M.D., of Des Moines, joined Duane E. MITCHELL, M.D. on June 3 for the practice of his profession and
is located in Dr. MITCHELL'S office.
Jack ELLIOTT, a vice-president of the Security State Bank in Mount Ayr, was elected president recently during a meeting
of the Blue Grass Bankers Association.
The Valentine Rebekkah Lodge No. 528 of Kellerton was host to the Distrcit No. 80 Convention on May 13 at the I.O.O.F.
Hall. The session was opned by the local lodge with Lois EPPS as Noble Grand and Marlene GREIMANN as Vice Grand.
Mount Ayr Community's state heavyweight wrestler Curt BRABY has beennamed to honorable mention status in two national
wrestling publication Amatuer Wrestling News and The Young Wrestler. BRABY's record of 73 wins and eight
losses placed him 68th in the nation.
Dr. Collus LAWHEAD of Mount Ayr shot a one-over-par 106 for 27 holes to win the Mount Ayr open golf tournament held
June 5.
Dave WILSON pitched a one hitter to lead Mount Ayr to a 4-2 victory over Bedford in the baseball opener at Mount
Ayr June 3. WILSON struck out 13 and walked seven in picking up his first victory. Mike EASON led the hitting.
The Mount Ayr Community Raiderette softball team successfully opened their defense of the Tall Corn title with a
15-4 victory over Bedford. Jodi GILES was on the mound for Mount Ayr giving up seven hits, striking out seven and
walking four. Sheri WOOD had the most hits for the Raideretts.
