A diesel engine that will help automotive students learn about diesel engine operation was given to the Mount
Ayr Community high school vocational mechanics program by the Des Moines Area Community College. Seniors Robby
LARSON and Josh WASKE plan to go on to study diesel mechanics following high school and vocational mechanics
program instructor Vern THOMPSON arranged the acquisition of the engine to help give the students opportunity
to work with diesel mechanics on the high school level.
Four students from The Dance Connection received first place in the variety acts division at the I Love Dance
competition in Cedar Rapids Sunday, May 4. Jessica BURGHER, Rachel HALEY, Ashley HENSEL and Jessica HYMBAUGH
performed a highly energetic gymnastic and jazz routine to "Rock This Town" and were picked for first place.
Gene POPPE, president of Mercantile Bank, is pleased to announce the hiring of Doug BERTE at Merhantile Bank
of Western Iowa in Mount Ayr. BERTLE is not entirely new to the Mercantile staff as he was employed at the bank
during the summer of 1996 as part of an intern program through the university. BERTE will join the staff on
May 19.
Place's Discount Stores announced that Nial BELZER will be the manager of their Mount Ayr store. BELZER was
most recently manager of Place's store at Bethany, MO. BELZER replaces Paul KEENAN, who will be manager of
Place's store in Burlington, KS.
A Delphos resident has been named as executive director for the Southern Iowa Rural Water Association, replacing
Earl HANTHORN. Matt DELUHERY, 35, of Delphos has been working at SIRWA since mid-February to become acquainted
with the operation and took over officially April 28. DELUHERY and his wife, Elizabaeth, are parents of a daughter,
Cassandra, 12.
The Mount Ayr Community elementary school math bee team placed fourth in the state and had three individuals in
the top 25 in the state at the state math bee in Marshalltown Saturday. The squad consisted of Clara TERRELL, Jason
WILKEY, Dustin BJUSTROM, Mark CRAIN, Mark TRULLINGER and Daniel STULL.
