Amy SCHAFER, a student in the Mount Ayr Office Education program a the Mount Ayr Community high school, received fifth
place in Prepared Verbal Speaking I at the national Office Education leadership conference held in Nashville, TN April
24-27. The Parliamentary team of Alan BAKER, Shawn GEORGE, Beth FLETCHALL, Cheryl CARLSON and Rick SWEET received
11th place. Susan BUCKNER received 12th place in Extemporaneous Speaking I and Alan BAKER received 11th place in Typing
I. The top six placed in the nation received plaques and the top 20 in each contest wre recognized.
Mayor Dick SNETHEN made the Redding Centennial offical with a proclamation last week as work continued on the many
details that are part of a centennial celebration. Other officers are Jim HULLINGER, centennial president, Jack BAILEY,
vice-president and Connie LYNCH, secretary.
Ed HEWLETT, son of Mr. and Mrs. ALbert HEWLETT of Grand River, was one of the 298 FFA members who received the Iowa
Farmer degree at the state Future Farmers of America leadership conference in Cedar Rapids recently.
Three Des Moines men were arrested and charged with burglary in the second degree following a break-in at Ringgold
County Hospital at 1:15 a.m. Saturday morning. Michael Lee PURCELL, 19, of Des Moines, Barry Scott CUMMINS, 20, of Des
Moines and a 17-year-old juvenile whose name was not released by authories, were arrested in the hospital. A window
had been broken out of a main door to the hospital, another window was broken into the public health nurses station,
fire extinguishers were squirted around the hall and damage to the hospital was estimated at between $500 and $800,
according to the Ringgold County Sheriff's Office.
Ted HIGHTSHOE of Creston, a former Mount Ayr resident, has been transferred to the home office of Heritage Communications
in Des Moines where he will serve as projects manager for the company.
Mount Ayr volunteer firemen were called out twice on Monday, May 3. Monday afternoon they went to the Mount Ayr
Laundromat when a dryer malfunctioned and over-heated. About 6:10 p.m. the same day, they put out a small fire in a barn
at the LeRoy WOOD farm about eight miles southeast of Mount Ayr, where Mary Ann O'MAILIA and her family live. There was
very little damage done by either fire, according to fire chief Bob SICKELS.
