In the Republican primary election held Monday, 2029 voters cast ballots for the office of governor giving Wm. S.
BEARDSLEY, incumbent, strong support with 943 votes to 566 for Kenneth A. EVAN and 521 for W. H. NICHOLAS. The
Democrats practially divided their support for the two candidates for the nomination for governor, giving LOVELESS 161 to 170 for WEARIN. X. T. PRENTIS of Mount Ayr, who is serving his first term as state senator from the fifth district, won
renomination over John E. YOUNG of Afton.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold (Jack) WILKEY of Clark SD have been officially notified by Army headquarters of the death of their
son, Pvt. Franklin H. WILKEY in Korea. WILKEY, 17 years of age, son of Harold and Lula WILKEY, former residents of
the Ellston vicinity, was listed as missing in action in Korea in September.
What is known as Fife's Grove, south of Loch Ayr, which is owned by the state of Iowa, has been turned over to the
Mount Ayr Lions Club for development into a picnic grounds for the use and benefit of everyone in Ringgold county.
Plans provide for the building of two fireplaces, a dozen tables and other equipment.
Japp DALBEY of Grant City, MO won the Mount Ayr open golf tournament held Saturday at the country club. DALBEY defeated
Bill CHAMBERS of Greenfield, two up to win the title.
Donald (Jake) DAILEY resumed his duties as Ringgold county recorder on Monday, after a leave of absence of a little
over a year's duration after being recalled to duty as a naval reservists.
In the Stanton-Mount Ayr baseball game Sunday, six Vet players won 11 of the 50 prizes being offered by the Mount
Ayr business men. Joe McNEILL was the first winner -- 10 gallons of gas from Doyle J. DENHART -- for stealing second
base. He also won a free grease job and oil change for making the first score. The Vets won over Stanton, 5-4.
