Most of the celebration of Halloween was positive or harmless around Ringgold county but quite a bit of damage was
done in the downtown Kellerton area over the weekend, according to the Ringgold county sheriff's department. Vandals tore
planter boxes off the front of the Kellerton Cafe. An antique bell by the fire station was upset and the frame work
broken, causing damage to the antique which will cost quite a bi to fix. [The bell is the old fire alarm bell which was
re-set with brick framework. ~ SRB] The beauty shop sign at Kathy COMER'S beauty shop was destroyed. A number of
items were also strewn around the main street area.
A number of blanks were filled in when Ringgold county voters went to the polls Tuesday to elect mayors and council
members in the municipal elections. In Mount Ayr, Clyde SUMMERS was re-elected as mayor and four council members were
named - Mike DOUBLEDAY, Bill SCHUSTER and Eldon E. STILL to four-year terms, and Edward McCREARY to a one-year term to
fill an unexpired term. In the mayor's race, Clyde SUMMERS was re-elected with 144 votes.
Jamie HAIDSIAK of Clearfield was awarded her American FFA degree at the national FFA convention in Louisville, KY this
past week. The award to HAIDSIAK and two star chapter award the Mount Ayr Community FFA chapter received were two highlights
for the students who made the trip.
Maryville MO twirler Ashley PEDERSEN recently competed in the National Baton Twirling Association national and world
open twirling champiionships held at Notre Dame University, where she claimed national titles in four events. PEDERSEN,
a sophomore at Maryville high school, is the daughter of David and Diana PEDERSEN and [is] the granddaughter of Richard
and Carole DAVISON of Maloy.
The Paul SMITH and Ken SMITH families were selected to represent Ringgold county as one of Iowa's conservation farm
families of the century. The SMITHS were one of 78 families from across Iowa honored at the 1999 Farm Progress Show in
the Amanas recently.
