A new mayor of Mount Ayr and one new councilman assumed their duties Tuesday. They are J. L. SCHARDEIN, who won over
retiring mayor J. M. TURNER in the November 7 election by a vote of 235 to 189, and Doyle H. SCOTT, who edged out C. E.
HOLLOPETER for councilman by five votes - 268 to 263. Holdover councilmen are Harold DAVIS, L. W. (Joe) GROSS, Charles
HARVEY and James MAHAN.
Vital statistics records in the office of clerk of the district court year 1961 listed 190 births, 97 deaths, 45
marriages, nine divorces and two adoptions. During the 12 months' period in 1960 were recorded 186 births, 114 deaths,
42 marriages, seven divorces and four adoptions. In the office of Edna BURGHER, county recorder, 2,542 instruments were
filed as compared with 3,035 in 1960 and 2,641 in 1959. Instruments filed included deeds, mortgages, chattel mortgages
and contracts. County warrants issued in the office of Albert DRAKE, county auditor, totaled 3,824. Ada ROGERS, county
treasurer, reported that 3,105 cars and 935 trucks were registered in 1961.
The Ringgold County Hospital's queen of the new year is Caryl Ann SCHAEFER, who made her appearance at 1:29 a.m., on
January 1. Parents of the girl, who weighed six pounds, 14 and 1/2 ounces, are Mr. and Mrs. Robert SCHAEFER of Diagonal.
Also on the welcoming committee is a 14-year-old brother, Randy.
Dr. Duane E. MITCHELL of this city was the attending physician.
Kenneth G. HOSFIELD of Elgin IL, assistant to the freight traffic manager, sales and service of the Milwaukee Railroad
in Chicago, IL has been appointed assistant to the traffic vice president, which duties he assumed December 1. Mr. HOSFIELD
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy HOSFIELD of Ellston and Mrs. HOSFIELD is the former Shirley KASTER, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Perry KASTER of Kellerton and granddaughter of Mrs. Jessie NEWTON of this city.
Phil WHITE, meat cutter at the
local Hy-Vee Food Store, was the recipient of a sales award winning trip offered by Morrell & Co. of Ottumwa.
Maurice HANSON, Republican, of Grant township assumed his duties Tuesday as a member of the board of supervisors
for a term of three years. He succeeds John R. NOLAN, Republican, of Benton township who retires from the office after
serving the county for nine successive years.
Richard W. GISH assumed his duties Tuesday as county engineer, as a
successor to the late M. A. RUBEK, who died suddenly September 22 of a heart attack. Mr. and Mrs. GISH, daughter Martha,
11, and son Warren, six, arrived Friday in Mount Ayr and are at home in the Milton HENDERSON property, 304 West Madison
Street, which they recently purchased.
Patrick BUTLER, 11 years of age, escaped serious injury Tuesday evening when he and
several other boys were sledding south of the Chevrolet garage. The accident happened about 5:30 when the youth's sled was
struck at the Cliff LAYTON corner by a car being driven north by Dr. Duane E. MITCHELL. The impact threw the sled and the
rider about 30 feet, according to sheriff Elbert STRANGE, who investigated the accident. Patrick suffered facial and body
bruises and was taken to the Ringgold County Hospital for X-rays, which revealed no broken bones.
John BLAUER of Tingley and Sharon CARROLL of West Des Moines escaped injury when the cars which they were driving
collided Tuesday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. at the intersection on Highway 2 at the northeast corner of Rose Hill Cemetery in
Mount Ayr.
