When the first world sprint car championship is held in Australia in February, a Mount Ayr racing driver will be among those seeking the world crown. Randy SMITH of Mount Ayr will be one of 10 drivers from the United States representing the country in the Festival of Sports, Australia's showcase of sports being held in conjunction with the America's Cup sailing races. This means that Randy, his wife Connie and their children, Chadd and Christi, are in for an adventure as well as the chance for Randy to be recognized worldwide for his driving ability.

Mel HAWKE, 74, of Mount Ayr, is in Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines -- reported by his wife, Marjorie, to be "doing fine" -- after he had become entangled in a corn auger on a Harvestore Thursday, Nov. 27.
