For the first summer since 1977 corn is tasseling before the Fourth of July -- way ahead of the traditional "knee high by
the fourth of July" adage. In the Ringgold county area, corn is tasseling already in three percent of the fields,
according to this week's Iowa Crop and Weather Report of the Iowa Agricultural Statistics office. Corn plants jumped to
an average height of 46 inches, an increase of 14 inches during the week, while the tallest plants reached 62 inches.
The dedication of a memorial bell will ring in the Benton Centennial celebration this Sunday, July 5, in the town of 52
population, located five miles west of Mount Ayr just south of Highway 2. There will be a parade, numerous games and
contests, memorabilia, country music and the crowning of a queen. All these events are expected to draw a crowd to the
town which remembers a peak population of around 300 persons who gained employment mainly from the Great Western Railroad
which ran along the south edge of Benton.
Tracy STEPHENS, daughter of Donnie and Julia STEPHENS of rural Redding, was elected state vice-president of the Junior
American Legion Auxiliary at a state convention. Last year Tracy served as state chaplain and was Mount Ayr unit president.
Shelly JONES, daughter of Ken and Janice JONES of Mount Ayr, as fifth district president, led a caucus in the new-officer
election process. Flo BISHOP of Mount Ayr, local and fifth district chair person of junior activities, accompanied the
young women to state convention.
Four Mount Ayr Community junior high school students recently attended Northwest Missouri State University's summer music
camp '87. Those participating included Michelle HYMBAUGH, Teresa BICKERS, Mike HYMBAUGH and Craig McCLURE.
Management at the Place's store in Mount Ayr has changed recently. New Place's assistant manager is Randy PURDUN of
Hatfield, MO. New manager of the store here is Greg SUMY, a Skidmore, MO native, who has worked with Place's for two years
and most recently was assistant manager of the Monroe City, MO store.
Terry HENRY of Mount Ayr qualified for the national roller skating championships to be held later this summer after
midwest regionals held recently. He received a silver and a bronze medal. HENRY is the son of Kevin and Peggy HENRY of
Mount Ayr.
