A total of 70 hams are set to be given away in the Great Mount Ayr Ham Giveaway this year.

Janice WEDDLE of Mount Ayr recently received congratulations from President Jack MAGRUDER at Truman State University in Kirksville, MO for being selected as a National Merit Scholar. A 2001 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school, she is the daughter of Dan and Kristy WEDDLE of Mount Ayr.

A total of 18 Mount Ayr Community junior high school students tried out for the Southwest Iowa Bandmaster's junior high honor band with one student selected. Brian INLOES, a seventh grader, will be part of the concert scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9.

Members of Helping Enrich the Lives of People (H.E.L.P.), the youth philanthropic organization recently formed in Ringgold county, met for a monthly meeting last week. The group, organized with the help of the Dekko Foundation, determines how grant funds will be used to help enrich the lives of Ringgold county residents. Those attending the meeting were Kacey MILER, Katie AMICK, Kim LARSEN, Amanda HYNEK, Jerry WERNER, Greg GOODALE, Abby STEPHENS, Trevor WOLF, Robbie MASON, Daniel STULL and Jada MOORE.

Two Diagonal volleyball players have received Bluegrass Conference honors for the 2001 volleyball season. Leslie MOFITT and Andrea BENTLEY, both seniors, were the recipients of these honors.

Mount Ayr Community's Raider cross country team placed 18th in the state Class 2A cross country meet in Fort Dodge Saturday. The Raiders' top placing was a 76th place by Luke STILL. The Raiders had a team score of 526 for the day.

It’s official. The Mount Ayr Community school district will have a bowling team for competition this winter. There will be varsity and junior varsity bowling teams for both boys and girls with more than 230 students already expressing interest in being on the teams. The Huntsmans will coach the team with help from other people as well.
