Snapshots of Ringgold County

Courtesy of Mount Ayr Record-News

As part of our commemoration of the Record-News' 150th year of publishing, each week we will feature a photo of life in Ringgold County. "Snapshots of Ringgold County" photos will vary as the seasons and events dictate.

December 20, 2012: Courthouse square shines in holiday light

All that's missing from this night scene on the Mount Ayr square is a blanket of new fallen snow. Chances of a white Christmas appear slim, however.

December 27, 2012: Into a strong headwind

Blustery northwest winds that accompanied the first snow of the season made travel difficult for these geese. The SchoolNet station in Mount Ayr recorded a peak gust of 48 mph. To further complicate their lives, cold temperatures heading into Christmas day covered most area ponds and small lakes with a thin layer of ice.

December 27, 2012: First snow

December 27, 2012: Whose woods these are...

After the snow from last week, the Ringgold Trailway east of Mount Ayr resembles the scene from the famous Robert Frost poem, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." A memorable line states, "The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep..."

February 21, 2013: Taking a break

A flock of Canada geese settle in on a pond near Clearfield Saturday morning. The nesting area is posted to keep people away from the several hundred geese gathered there.

March 07, 2013: Surprise snow

Ringgold county was hit by a surprise snowstorm early Tuesday morning, with snowfall amounts approaching a half-foot accompanied by gusty winds. Forecasters had expected the brunt of the storm to miss the area.

March 21, 2013: The Bridge of Ringgold County

Although it may not be as famous as the Bridges of Madison County, this photo shows our county's tiny covered bridge which spans a ditch between two farm fields just north of Redding.

March 28, 2013: Swans make stopover in county

A group of swans made a stop in Ringgold County last week on a farm pond southeast of Mount Ayr. Believed to be Tundra swans, they are headed for their nesting areas which can reach as far west as the Arctic tundra in Alaska. They winter on the Chesapeake Bay on the eastern coast of the United States.

March 28, 2013: What happened to spring?

Thanks to last weekend's snow, this group of robins is probably reconsidering their early return to Ringgold county. After a cold start to this spring, temperatures are predicted to moderate into the 50s this weekend.

March 28, 2013: Past its prime, still beautiful

This photo shows the unique architecture of early barns in the county. This particular barn is found on County Road P64 south of Ellston.
