Never too late to learn
Geraldine "Gerri" SMITH of rural Ellston graduated in January with her master of arts in mathematics education
from the University of Phoenix. SMITH, 75, said she began pursuit of the degree "to see if I still had the
ability to learn." Originally from Texas, SMITH began her career as one of the first African-American women
to work for AT&T as a design engineer. She currently substitute teaches in the Diagonal, Clearfield and Murray
school systems.
