Services Friday for Well-Known Farmer;
Was Born In Scotland
Charles C. Bruce, 73, well-known Jasper county farmer who
lived about four miles southwest of Newton, died early this
morning at his farm home.
Born in Scotland on July 29, 1877, to David and Margaret
Bruce, he came to the United States as a young boy with the
family. They first settled in Pennsylvania, then moved to a
farm near Monroe and when a young man Mr. Bruce moved to
Prairie City.
Married 1899
On Dec. 13, 1899, he was married to Alice Mabel Huff near
Metz. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary
in December 1949. They spent all of their life on the farm
except from 1920 to 1923 when they lived in Newton.
Mr. Bruce was a charter member of the Palo Alto Grange and a
past master of that group, was a township trustee, belonged
to the Elks lodge, Red Men's lodge and was a member of the
Methodist church east of Monroe.
Survivors
He is survived by his widow; three sons, Glen, Earl and
Ronald, all of Newton; a daughter, Mrs. Erma B. Allen of Des
Moines; several grandchildren; four brothers, Andy of
Newton, John of Monroe, Robert of Marshalltown and David of
Des Moines, and two sisters, Mrs. Burt (Margaret) Turner and
Mrs. Percy (Mary) Van Epps, both of Newton.
Mr. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; one sister,
Mrs. Helen Rayburn, and one brother, William Bruce, both of
whom died in late March of this year, and one daughter,
Evelyn, who died in 1941.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two
o'clock in Johnson-Murdoch Funeral Home. Officiating will be
Rev. F. D. Boldt and burial will be in the Sugar Grove

Mrs. Alice Bruce Dies at Hospital;
Services Tuesday
Mrs. Charles (Alice) Bruce, 85, of Rt. 4, Newton, a
lifelong resident of Jasper County, died Saturday evening at
the Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm. Tuesday at the
Morgan - Loehr Funeral Home.
The Rev. Austin Rugger, associate minister of the First
Methodist Church will conduct the services. Burial will be
in Sugar Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Bruce will lie in state at the funeral home
afternoon today.
Survivors are three sons, Glen C. Bruce, Earl Bruce and
Ronald Bruce, all of Newton; a daughter, Mrs. August (Erma)
Allen of Des Moines; nine grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a
daughter; brother and sister.
Mrs. Bruce was a charter member of the Palo Alto
Grange.
The daughter of Samuel and Mary Carnaby Huff, she was
born Nov. 23, 1878 on a farm northeast of Prairie City.
She was married to Charles C. Bruce Dec. 13, 1899 on her
parents farm near Prairie City. ~ The Newton Daily News,
