Allen, 84, who died of cancer Wednesday at his home at Mercy Court, 921 Sixth Ave. Mr. Allen was born in Trenton, Mo., and lived in Des Moines for 62 years. He was a typesetter for the Des Moines Register and Tribune Co., until his retirement in 1969. He was a member of the company's retiree club, a member of the International Typographical Union and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. He is survived by his wife, Erma; a son, Robert of Des Moines; a daughter, Evelyn Esau of Carson City, Nev.; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Born: May 31, 19051 in Newton, Jasper Co., Iowa Obituary: Erma AllenDES MOINES -- Erma Bruce Allen, 90, of 921 6th Ave., Des Moines, a former resident of Newton, died Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Westover Funeral Home. Graveside rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sugar Grove Cemetery near Newton. Friends may call and visitation with the family will be held at the funeral home prior to the services. Memorials to Hospice of Central Iowa will be accepted. Survivors are a son, Robert of Des Moines; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ronald Bruce at Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband, August, and a daughter, Evelyn Jeanne Esau. Mrs. Allen, a homemaker, was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. She was the daughter of Charles and Alice Hough [Huff] Bruce and was born in Newton. She was married to August Allen March 11, 1925. Ruth Sylvia (Swanson) Allen
Born: August 19, 1930 in Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa 3 Those left to honor Ruth's memory are her 2 sons and daughter-in-law, Dick "Red" Hansen of Bloomington, Illinois and Bill and Anbela Hansen of Des Moines, Iowa; 2 daughters and son-in-law, Deb Danielson of Lincoln, Nebraska and Diane and Larry Plumb of Newton, Iowa; her 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Kay Swanson of Kansas City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents. Ruth was a graduate of North High School in Des Moines, Iowa and a graduate of Iowa Methodist School of Nursing. On Iowa's Sesquicentennial, Ruth rode with a group of Iowans on their bicycles from Long Beach, California to the White House in Washington D.C. She celebrated for 65th birthday on the ride.
