Obituary: August A. Allen

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sugar Grove Cemetery near Newton for August A. Allen, 84, who died of cancer Wednesday at his home at Mercy Court, 921 Sixth Ave.

Mr. Allen was born in Trenton, Mo., and lived in Des Moines for 62 years. He was a typesetter for the Des Moines Register and Tribune Co., until his retirement in 1969. He was a member of the company's retiree club, a member of the International Typographical Union and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

He is survived by his wife, Erma; a son, Robert of Des Moines; a daughter, Evelyn Esau of Carson City, Nev.; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Westover Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa. ~ Des Moines Register, November 17, 1989.

Obituary: Erma Allen

DES MOINES -- Erma Bruce Allen, 90, of 921 6th Ave., Des Moines, a former resident of Newton, died Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Westover Funeral Home.

Graveside rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sugar Grove Cemetery near Newton.

Friends may call and visitation with the family will be held at the funeral home prior to the services.

Memorials to Hospice of Central Iowa will be accepted.

Survivors are a son, Robert of Des Moines; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ronald Bruce at Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband, August, and a daughter, Evelyn Jeanne Esau.

Mrs. Allen, a homemaker, was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

She was the daughter of Charles and Alice Hough [Huff] Bruce and was born in Newton.

She was married to August Allen March 11, 1925.

Erma B. Allen, 90, of Mercy Court Apartments, 921 Sixth Ave., died of a stroke Tuesday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Westover Funeral Home. Burial is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Sugar Grove Cemetery at Newton.

Mrs. Allen, a homemaker, was born in Newton and moved to Des Moines in 1925.

She is survived by a son, Robert of Des Moines; a brother, Ronald Bruce of Newton; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Robert "Bob" Allen, 81, died Monday, December 3, 2012 at his home in Des Moines. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm, Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Westover Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will take place at Sugar Grove (Metz) Cemetery near Newton, Iowa later this spring.

Bob was born March 17, 1931 in Des Moines to August and Erma (Bruce) Allen. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Drake University and began a career as a CPA. While living in Newton, Bob was the joint owner of Thomas & Allen CPA firm. He then moved to Des Moines and was a franchise owner of Safeguard Business Systems.

Memberships included The Bridge Club (Bob was a Life Master), Elks Club and VFW. He had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and loved his family.

Survivors include his daughters: Deborah (Carl) Danielson of Lincoln, NE, Diane (Larry) Plumb of Newton; step-sons: Dick Hansen of Bloomington, IL, Bill (Angela) Hansen of Des Moines; grandchildren: Krista Jackson, Cris Hansen, Chase Plumb, Beau Plumb; great grandchildren: Kamren Stephens, Hunter Schepper, Ella Dungan, Jordan Hansen, Jacy Hansen, Shannon Heaton, and Holly Heaton. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Jean Esau.

Those left to honor Ruth's memory are her 2 sons and daughter-in-law, Dick "Red" Hansen of Bloomington, Illinois and Bill and Anbela Hansen of Des Moines, Iowa; 2 daughters and son-in-law, Deb Danielson of Lincoln, Nebraska and Diane and Larry Plumb of Newton, Iowa; her 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Kay Swanson of Kansas City, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ruth was a graduate of North High School in Des Moines, Iowa and a graduate of Iowa Methodist School of Nursing.

On Iowa's Sesquicentennial, Ruth rode with a group of Iowans on their bicycles from Long Beach, California to the White House in Washington D.C. She celebrated for 65th birthday on the ride.
