He has been in ill health for two years and the last serious illness had covered a period of six months. Mr. Huff was born March 26, 1841, in Lancashire, England, and coming to America in the fall of 1866 he settled in Coal Valley, Ill., and worked for a while in the coal mines. From Coal Valley he came to the area near Red Rock, where he worked for several years in the mines operated by Joseph Rhodes. Later he came to Mound Prairie township, where he took up farming, which he followed continually until March, 1914, when he retired and came to Newton to live. He made a visit to his former home in England in 1873. In February, 1878, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Mary Johnson, who together with their only child, Mrs. Alice Bruce of near Monroe, survives him. Mr. Huff joined the church at Wil? school house at the time that Rev. ? C. Harrah was holding meetings there, and he has been a faithful adherent to the belief that he expressed. Mary Lucinda (Carnaby) Huff
Born: September 23, 1844 in Bath, Summit Co., Ohio Mrs. Mary L. Huff Dies Early Today At Local HospitalMrs. Mary Lucinda Huff, resident of Jasper county since 1870, died this morning at 6:32 o'clock at the Skiff Memorial hospital at the age of 84 years. Funeral services will be held at the Murdoch Funeral home on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial will be in the Sugar Grove cemetery. Dr. George C. Williams, pastor of the Congregational church of this city will have charge of the rites. Mrs. Huff is survived by two daughters, Mrs. M. T. Miller and Mrs. Charles Bruce and one son, Will Johnson. One son, Thomas preceded her in death. Mr. Huff died 13 years ago. She was born Sept. 23, 1844. ~ The Newton Daily News, April 1, 1929. __________Mrs. Mary L. HuffFuneral services for Mrs. Mary Huff were held last Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Murdoch Funeral home and burial was in the Sugar Grove cemetery. The services were conducted by Dr. R. L. Stuart. Mary L. Huff, daughter of Thomas and Harriett Carnaby, was born in Bath, O., Sept 23, 1844. She was the third child of a family of five children. Two preceded her in death and two sisters are still living, Mrs. Elizabeth Ward of Ft. Dodge, Ia., and Mrs. Harriett Anderson of Knoxville, Ill. She was married to Thomas J. Johnson in Monmouth, Ill., February 15, 1856. To this union three children were born, William A. Johnson, Mrs. M. T. Miller and Thomas C. Johnson. The son, Thomas C. died in infancy and her husband, died April 1, 1870. Then on Feb. 7, 1878, she was united in marriage to Samuel Huff and to this union one daughter, Mrs. Charles C. Bruce, was born, who survives. Mr. Huff preceded her in death 13 years ago. She is survived by 11 grandchildren and nine great grand children and one great great grand child. She joined the Congregational church at an early age. Pallbearers were B. L. Shaffer, Allen Kroh, Alfred Hague, Glen Bruce, Earl Bruce and Glen Ferguson. ~ Jasper County Record, April 11, 1929, page 4, column 3.
