Established in 1839 as the state's first prison in Fort Madison, Lee County.

Anamosa State Penitentiary
Also known as Additional Penitentiary and Anamosa Reformatory. Its first 20 inmates were transferred from Ft. Madison in 1873.

Iowa State Reformatory for Women
Established in 1918 as Iowa's first women-only penitentiary. Its first 22 inmates were transferred from Anamosa.
