On last Friday evening at the opera house the first commencement exercise of the Pomeroy high school were given. An audience that filled the hall and overflowed into the galleries greeted and applauded the young orators as they bade farewell to their schoolmates and gracefully bowed themselves into a world of wider scope and more ambitious action. A Busy Week Ahead For P. H. S. Seniors
Program Starts With Baccalaureate Sermon Next Sunday
With commencement but little more than a week away, the intervening days promise to be busy ones for those nine young ladies and three young men of Pomeroy High School who are to receive the coveted sheepskins on Saturday evening, May 22. The commencement address this year will be delivered by Prof. C. W. Wassam, and will take place at the Strand Theatre on the above date. The program in connection with the graduation week commences next Sunday evening, April 16, at the M. E. church, when Rev. T. G. Shaw, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will preach the annual baccalaureate sermon. The senior play “Contrary Mary” is set for Thursday, May 10, at the Stand Threatre, when the amateur thespians will display their talents on the state. Baccalaureate Sermon Sunday, May 29
The baccalaureate sermon for the graduating class of Pomeroy high school will be delivered by Rev. O. E. Ellefson at the M. E. church on Sunday evening, May 29, and the closing event of the commencement program will be Friday evening, June 3, when the ten graduates will receive their diplomas at the annual commencement exercises at the Stand theatre. Mr. W. A. Price of the Des Moines Lecture Bureau will deliver the address, “The Four Larger Ships.” The Class Roll:

Ellefson will deliver the Baccalaureate Sermon at the M. E. Church. On Thursday, May 31, Rev. Thompkins of Fort Dodge will deliver the Commencement address. Rev. Thompkins is an eloquent speaker and having spent practically his life among students, his address should be very appropriate. On this program Mr. L. H. Ladd will present the class of 1923 and Mrs. C. A. Marple, president of the local Board of Education, will present the diplomas.

Commencement Exercises May 29
Attorney Cavanaugh of Fort Dodge To Deliver Commencement Address – Ten in Class
The commencement exercises of the Pomeroy high school will be held at the Strand [theatre] on Thursday evening, May 29th, at which time ten members of the senior class will bring to a close their high school work…..One of the big social events of the commencement season, was the Junior-Senior banquet, which was held at the M. E. church last Saturday evening. An event of this kind always calls for elaborate decoration of the banquet room, and the class of 1925 were determined not to be out-classed in looking after this particular part of the event. On Thursday evening of the week takes place the senior class play, “The Colonel’s Maid.” It will be held at the Strand Theatre. The baccalaureate sermon will be delivered in the Presbyterian church on Sunday evening, May 25, by Rev. O. H. Frerking. There are three girls and seven boys in the class which will be graduated this year. Their names are listed as follows:

Pomeroy Public Schools Graduate Largest Class In Their History
Friday, May 29th has been set aside as Commencement day. This date will not only mark the close of the present school year, nor alone the graduation of the Senior class, for in addition to these things, which are always of great interest to our community, this year’s class has the honor of being by far the largest that has even been graduated from the Pomeroy public schools. This date marks the advent of a new era in our schools. Heretofore, a class of 12 to 15 had been considered large; today there is only one class in the high school with less than twenty members. Mr. Royal Holbrook of Ames College will give the commencement address. His topic will be, “Iowa.” Class of 1925:

Maxwell opened the exercises with the invocation, followed by a song, “My Merry Serenade” by the Girls’ Glee Club, under the able directorship of Miss Esther Bocke.

Seventeen Graduates Receive Diplomas
Address of Dr. E. L. Jones of Storm Lake is Well Received
Commencement exercises of the Pomeroy high school were held in the American Legion hall Wednesday evening of this week. The program began with the invocation by the Rev. G. E. Paulowiet, followed by a song “Our High School Home” by the boys quartet.
Dr. E. L. Jones of Storm Lake was then introduced, and his address, the subject of which was “the Time, The Place, and The Man,” was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. Dr. Jones held this undivided attention of his audience throughout his address, and the close attention accorded him gave proof of the keen interest of is hearers. Pomeroy would welcome Dr. Jones in the capacity of a speaker again. Following the address the Honor keys were given this year, one for the boys and one for the girls. These keys are given for citizenship, school spirit and work in various activities. These achievement keys were presented to Norman Welander and Marcella Schultz. The class was then presented to J. D. Parker, president of the Board of Education, who after short and appropriate remarks, presented the diplomas. The benediction by the Rev. Chas. A. Richards closed the exercises after which the graduates received congratulations of relatives and friends. The class of 1933 receiving diplomas is a follows:

No Admission Charge – An innovation this year is the fact that there will be no admission fee charged for the commencement exercises. The general public is cordially invited and urged to attend the program.
Address by Supt. Miller
The Class of 1937 and the audience will listen to an address by Supt. K. D. Miller of the Fort Dodge high school, who will use as his subject “New Frontiers.” Supt. Miller is known as a capable and forceful speaker and his address should be heard by a large representation of the community. Music for the evening’s program will be furnished by the girls’ sextet of Pomeroy High School, under the direction of Miss Pauline Johnson, music instructor. Following the address by Supt. Miller, the class will be presented by Supt. L. H. Ladd, and the diplomas will be presented by J. D. Parker. Class honors go to Marie Evelyn Schon as valedictorian and to Dorothy George as salutatorian. The class flower is the Ophelia rose; class colors, salmon and white; and the class motto is “Faith and Tomorrow Are Ours.”

Junior-Senior Banquet A Most Pleasant Event
The toast program, “Mystic Splendor of the Orient” was presided over by Jack Baker as toastmaster. The welcome was given by Ruth Kruchten and the response by Curtis Johnson. An oriental melody was played on the piano by Helen Condon and Lucille Olson. The senior class history was read by George Sandquist. Bernice Parker sang, “Memories” with Mary Ellen Gaedke accompanist at the piano. The closing talk on the program, “Confucious Say,” was made by Supt. A. O. Larson. V. H. Pomeroy Public School Graduates A Large Class
The commencement exercises for the Pomeroy public school were held Thursday evening, May 16, 1946, at the school auditorium, and a large audience was present to enjoy the occasion and witness the program in which twenty-eight of our find young people were involved. The past year, as in many previous years, our school has been very successful under the direction of Superintendent A. O. Larson and an efficient group of assisting instructors. The commencement exercises was a closing event of the school years. The program went very smoothly as scheduled. Miss Anne Lange played the processional, followed by invocation by Father N. J. Boes. A number was then presented by the H.S. octette. Rev. Magnus Nodtvedt of Fort Dodge gave a very inspiring class address to the group. The H. S. girl’s chorus rendered a selection, which was followed by the presentation of the class by Mr. Larson. Presentation of the diplomas was by the president of the board of education, K. S. Berry. Benediction was by Rev. E. D. Hart, and the recessional by Miss Lange. The class valedictorian was Sherman Bengert, and the salutatorian was Marcia Jan Els. Members of the class are as follows:
