I can't believe this! No wonder I've not been able to find the death of my grandmother's adoptive mother, Eliza E. Willard. This story is beginning to look like a soap opera.

The 1900 census shows Eliza E. and Frederick Klingler with "son", John R., or Wm. R.? I understood his name was Wm. That doesn't really matter I don't guess as he was not Eliza's son.

In answer to your question about whether Eliza was married prior to her Orndorf husband. No. I know they were living in Lewis Co. NY, town of Watson, on 1870 census. Husband: Orland Orendoff (name spelled several ways). Eliza was age 35, born NY. They had children: Joseph Orendorf, age 17, Horace, age 13 and Mary Jane age 8, all born NY.

When Eliza married Emmett Willard in Ottumwa in 1875 she had two children in the household: Horace and Mary (1885 Wapello State census). In her divorce papers filed in Wapello Co., she said she'd come to Ottumwa in 1870. Horace, I've found, died in 1892, after falling while intoxicated. He never married. Mary, Eliza's daughter, married Samuel Sherrod in July 1880....divorced....remarried to Henry Kearns 1893.

Eliza & Emmett Willard adopted my grandmother Ada in about 1882. Only record I've found about the adoption was in Eliza's divorce papers from Willard.

Eliza's marriage record to Emmett Willard say it was her 2nd marriage - her maiden name was Birch.

My grandmother Ada was only in Eliza's household about 10 yrs., before she married. She was between 14 and 15 yrs. old. She and my grandfather met at the newspaper office in Ottumwa where they both worked nights. She was a linotype operator.

In re Eliza's marriage to Frederick Klingler: I've been told Frederick died in 1915. His obit didn't show a wife's name. His first wife was a "Sarah", apparently.

I didn't know about William E. Dowd.

I'd really like to find when and where Eliza died and put an end to this part of the story. She is not a blood relative but the story is intriguing. I do appreciate your help!
