It is now obvious that the Sherman Ferris who was in the Civil War was the same Sherman Ferris who was married to Amanda Fair and the one who died in 1921.
On Ancestry.com there is an image of the the information relating to a Civil War pension application for Sherman Z. Ferris filed in 1903. At that time he was living in Colorado. The information indicates that Sherman Ferris is an invalid. On July 17, 1921 his wife, Manda Ferris applied for a pension as a widow. She indicates that she is living in the state of Washington.
There may or may not be 2 Sherman Ferris' buried in Agency Cemetery. If there are 2, it may be a simple mistake that the stone carver put the wrong information on the wrong stone after the death of Sherman Ferris in 1921. I have seen that done before within my own family. It is interesting that a genealogy listed on Ancestry indicates that the death records of the state of Washington indicates that there was a Sherman Ferris who died in that state in 1875.
The only way you may ever really solve the mystery is to obtain the Civil War records of Sherman Ferris from NARA. It will take time, but, to my way of thinking, it would be money well spent.
As I indicted earlier, I will snoop around the records in Wapello county to see what I can find.
