In Response To: CRAIG family in Keosauqua (1851-1900) (David Craig)

I am sure that the son that was a Doctor here in Keosauqua until the early 1940's is the one your was asking about. His name was Dr. James Craig. I think it was James A. Craig but not sure.

He married my Dad's first cousin, Florence St. John and I'm not sure if it was his first marriage or not. I was too young to remember his history. He delivered all four of us Jamison Kids. In fact, my youngest brother Craig was named after him as to carry on the name of Craig I always heard the Folks say. I expect the name was all the payment he got also as it was pretty rought times back in 1937 when Craig was born.

I have his picture somewhere and he was tall and as thin as a broomstick and had a mustashe.

He was only one of the two Doctors left in town or this part of the county during WWII and he was sick in bed and the people still came into his bedroom to get doctored. That I remember. He must have died around 1944 and is buried in Purdom Cemetary in Keosauqua.

I remember Dad saying that when he died everyone owed him money and his wife was left pretty poor so they mailed out the unpaid bills and never got enough back to pay for the postage.

My Borther Robert was born in 1926, I was born in 1928 and Vivian was born 1933 and Craig in 1937. And as I said he delivered all of us and I doubt if he was paid in money.

It was a joke at our house that Bob and I went to school wearing Doc Craigs shirts. He always gave us his old dress shirts so you know he was pretty skinny.

I hope this helps you out some.
