CRAIG, MILLER, MCARTHUR

I am beginning to research my g-g-grandfather's family in the Keosauqua area using information given to me by various sources, some proven and some questionable. I would appreciate any leads, corrections, or further information that anyone may be able to give me. There were two or three other Craig families in the area at the time, and any information on them would be useful too.

John Park Craig (b. 8 Feb 1834 in Brookville, Jefferson County, PA) learned the cabinet making trade in Brookville with his brother, Andrew. In 1855, he moved to Keosauqua where his uncle, William Craig worked as a physician and ran a pharmacy. William had moved to Keosauqua after graduating from medical school in 1851, opened a practice, and married Anna Brown of Keosauqua on 24 Nov 1858.

John became a partner in a cabinet making shop, probably with a Henry C. McArthur. On 6 May 1856, John married Mary Anne Miller whose father John Miller was (I believe) a part-owner of William's pharmacy business. In October of 1861, John Craig and his partner Henry McArthur sold their business and enlisted in the 15th Regiment, Company E of the Iowa Infantry.

John returned home on Christmas Day, 1862 suffering from severe dysentery, after having attained the rank of Captain. When he returned, he served as provost marshal of the county and then purchased part interest in a drug store (his Uncle and father-in-law's?), with the condition that his partner's half be sold to his friend Henry McArthur upon his return from the war. The business was renamed "Craig and McArthur's", and in September of 1865 was moved to Memphis, MO. John packed up his wife, 2 sons and a daughter, and moved shortly thereafter.

William Craig remained in Keosauqua with his wife and family of 5, until he eventually retired and his son took over the medical practice and ran it well into the 20th century.

Thank you in advance for any assistance,
David Craig
