Thank you. Here is some more info.There are two inscriptions in the bible. On the lined front page
"NAME- Mr. Fred W. Johns, Bonaparte, IA
ADDRESS- Battery H , 337th F A (field artillery)
On the cover page, in a different hand and ink is
Charles E. Johns, Feb 15- 1943, Savanna, Ill.
The town of Savanna replied and provided the obituary of the last Johns (2008) and there was no reference to Fred or Charles. I also noted that nearby Savanna was a military depot (Rock Island) so perhaps Charles was inducted and did his basic training there?
