The parents of Berendina (Dena) Wesselink are Dirk Hendrik Wesselink (born in Gelderland province, Netherlands)and Johanna Gerzina Lubbers (born Aug 6, 1837 in Aalten, Gelderland, Netherlands). Her parents are Berend Hendrik Lubbers (born March 15, 1802) and Dena Wevensborg (born Jan 16, 1807).
The D.H. Wesselink's immigrated to America in 1868 with three small children (Hendrik Jan, Berdendina and an infant son). The infant died at sea, but Johanna concealed the death (didn't want a burial at sea) until they reach land where the child was buried.
In late Sept, 1874, another tradegy struck the Wesselink family. Father Dirk Hendrik Wesselink and a neighbor, Arend John Kluevers, met their death by drowning in the Rock River. They had gone to the river with an ox team and a wagon to get their winter supply of wood since there was no wood on the treeless prairie.
The widow Wesselink with 6 small children (Hendrik Jan, Berendina, Alyda, Dirk Jan, Hendrik and Gerzina) married widower Harmen Jan Wissink, also with 6 children (Marten, Gerritje, Hermanus, Herman, Hermina and Harmen Jan Jr). Harmen Jan Wissink's wife (Hendrika [Gerzina] Wesselink} had died in Greenleafton, Minnesota between 1868 and 1872. Harmen Jan Wissink and Johanna Gerzina (Lubbers) Wesselink had two children together, Dirk Hendrik and Jacob.
Dirk (better known as Dick) was Sioux county Auditor for several years in 1920's
I have more information on the Wissinks, but very little on the Wesselinks.
If we can get your address, we can copy and mail several articles to you.
