In Response To: LaBrunes in Jefferson twp (Michael Cushing)

I am certainly familiar with the LaBrune name since they appear in all the records I am searching. I am researching Valin/Volin (French Canadian) and they lived in Jefferson from 1848 until 1860-70 when most of them moved to South Dakota. Joseph Valin was probably first and left in 1864 to settle in another French Settlement in Jefferson, Union County, South Dakota. The Union County Archives on the S. D. Gen Web site lists some of the people who went with Charles LaBreche to this settlement. LaBrune is not one of them, but could some of your ancestors have also gone to this settlement? I'm not sure the list is complete. I found Valin family vital records (marriages and births) in the Archives at St. Raphael Cathedral. The parish church for these French families was St. Joseph and apparently the surviving records were transferred to the Archdiocese of Dubuque. If you know this already, sorry for the repeat. I can also provide links to sources for French Genealogical Research, but it will help to know from where they came (Departement, etc.)
