He said it could have been a family thing - many times parents transferred property to their children for a nominal sum. Today it is usually written as "Ten dollars and other considerations" or something like that. It could also been part of an estate agreement that included other items other than real estate; or even as part or all of a debt payment.

The original documents should give a lot more information.
