Thank you so much for your response.

Yes, the 104 year old man (although he indicated in two Federal censuses that he was born in 1815) is James Francis McKeon and the man who died in 1924 is his son (the only one who survived out of 11 children). I found more detailed descriptions (Argus Leader Sioux falls and Lead South Dakota newspapers of what happened re the fire. What surprises me is how after living in Giard Iowa since 1865 there is no obit from there or McGregor for James and Anna. Also, how could a real estate transaction take place 7 years after his death? I have a subscription to newspapers.com but nothing came up for northern Iowa newspapers re an obit. I am overseas now but I will be returning to the US in Jan. and will move back to Sioux Falls in late Feb. I want to go to McGregor and continue my research. If you have any ideas of how I might dredge up additional information that would be great. I have a record of the Catholic churches and I am hoping to get some more information there. I am assuming that the county seat (Elkador?) will have the same records as Des Moines.
