I've found out the mystery of the names Ihde and Ehde. My class reunion was the last part of July. I talked to my high school friend and her sister - Mary Lou Ehde and Betty Jean Ehde and asked them about their spelling of the last name. What they told me was their great grandfather got mad at his brother and changed the spelling from Ihde to Ehde. My mother has always told me my high school friends were sort of related to me but did not go farther. Now I find out they are some of the people who moved from Clayton County, IA to Minnehaha County, South Dakota which is for all practical purposes Sioux Falls, Hartford and Humboldt, SD. My great grandparents did not come until later and got land farther out West in South Dakota. But, in the 30's my grand parents moved to a farm in the Hartford area. I lived on one of their farms in the 40's. It always seemed strange that my family was so close to most of the people in the Hartford area and knew a lot about them.
Well, now I know why - they came from the same area in Iowa and also the Ihde's came from Mecklenburg - the same area my great grandfather, Johan Heinrich Karl Meyer did. We all go back a long way. I do not know if we are really related, but do know my grandmother's two "Clayton Meyer" sisters married Ihde's in Clayton County. So, that may be the connection.I was wondering if someone reading this would be interested in me pursuing the Ehde/Ihde information. I had seen on a Clayton County site people looking for Ehde's.
