From the Thurs., 14 Jan. 1892 issue of the "Elkader Register," Garnavillo section, page 4, column 3:

Our community was horrified on Friday by the announcement that Mrs. Jos. Matt had fallen dead at her home near National. She had been engaged in her household work and was apparently as usual. Towards evening she complained of a pain in her side and sat down to rest. Medical aid was immediately summoned but before it arrived she expired. She leaves a family of eight children, the youngest of which is an infant only four weeks old. Her remains were buried at the Catholic cemetery on Monday. Full particulars will appear in our next.
