DIED. At his residence in Read twp., on Thursday, Eli Merkle passed away to the great beyond, and another old soldier was mustered into the grand army above the clouds of this life.
He was born in Armstrong county, Pa., June 19th, 1815, and came into this township about forty-two years ago. He was a member of 37th Iowa, well known as the Graybeard Regiment.
Besides the aged wife in feeble health he leaves four of the eleven children born to hi; these are: George, Henry, Sarah A. and Catherine wife of Darwin Hill.
The funeral occurred on Sunday, Rev. Mr. Lusk officiating, and was attended by friends of the family and a number of his late comrades of the war.
