Mrs. Eliza Adams Merkel, an old settler of Clayton county, died March 17th, 1897, at her home on her farm near Elkader, aged 73 years. She was born May 19th, 1824, in Armstrong county, Penn., and married Levi Merkel (deceased three years ago), in 1842. She, with her husband, came to Clayton county in 1855. She was the mother of eleven children, four of whom survive, Mrs. Dar Hill, Mrs. Pixler, George and Henry Merkel. Mrs. Mitchell, of National, and Nicholas Adams, of Elkader, were present at the funeral, the other brothers and sisters living at a distance. Interment was in the Elkader cemetery, Rev. F. L. Fisk officiating.

Surname spellings differ depending on the record. The obit of her husband Eli spells the surname as MERKEL, but many other records including his CW pension spell it as MARKEL
