Mustered Out - Another Old Veteran Joins the Grand Army in the Great Beyond

On Thursday evening of last week, at the residence of his brother Edward, in this township, occurred the death of Frederick Meisner, after a long and hugering [sic] sickness.

The subject of this short sketch was born at Meckern, in the province of Thuringen, Germany, in October, 1838, and was therefore a little over 48 years of age at the time of his death. He came to the United States in 1856, and came immediately to Elkader, where [he] worked at his trade as tailor until the breaking out of the war.

In 1861 a company was organized in Clayton County, of which Alva Bevins was captain, and Frederick enlisted in this company. It was assigned to the 9th Iowa infantry as Company E. The regiment took part in the battles of Pea Ridge, Chickasaw Bayou, siege of Vicksburg, Rinnggold, Dallas and Lookout Mountain, in all of which the subject of this sketch served with credit to himself and his country. The ninth was a fighting regiment and was in many campaigns, the result of which was that at his discharge in 1865, Mr. Meisner came home broken down in health and physically unable to do any manual labor.

Since then he has been a constant sufferer and death was a relief to him. At the organization of the Boardman Post, G.A.R., Mr. Meisner was one of the charter members, and his funeral on Saturday last was under the auspices of that order. Rev. F.W. Seifert preached the sermon.

Mr. Meisner was well [illegible] by all who knew him, and his death will be deeply regretted, not only by his comrades of the G.A.R., but by numerous acquaintances and friends.

[following the obituary were a list of public Resolutions by the G.A.R. post, including their sympathy, and respect ... "our flag and hall be draped for thirty days."
