So that reply was all wrong. You have the Wailes/Wales line correct. They seem to have used both last names almost interchangeably.

Here's a very good bio of Josiah from the 1914 Past and Present of Appanoose County, in case that's one you don't have:

You can go back one more generation from these probate documents from Prince George's County, Maryland, to Samuel Perry Wailes. You have to have an ID and be logged into Familysearch to view the documents.

Here's Ida's marriage to Lafayette Bates. I can't explain why Ida's mother's name is recorded as it is.
