So Confusing

WAILES, WALES, COVINGTON

I am so confused on these surnames. It seems like so many men named LC, Levin, John, JP, Benjamin, and Samuel, and women named Elizabeth, Susan and Sarah. And so many of them lived in MD, IN, IA, and MO. My grandmother Ethel Elizabeth BATES (B 1900) was the daughter of Seymour L. BATES (B 1871) and Ida L. WAILES, and granddaughter of Josiah Samuel WAILES (B 1848) and Sarah Jane CROSS. She was great granddaughter to John Perry WAILES (B 1795) and Sophia Elizabeth WILSON. After that I am very confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there really two different families of WALES and WAILES???
