In Response To: Coal Mines near Exline, Ia (Robert A. Monroe)

You might find the following excerpt on coal mining from the article, "Exline Has Become One of Most Thriving Towns in the County," printed in the 21 March 1913 issue of Semi-Weekly Iowegian helpful.

"The Iowa Block coal mine was opened about nine years ago. It has developed into a prosperous enterprise, shipping out 926 cars last year and doing a $73,000 business. About 125 men are employed on an average, producing about 250 tons a day. This is one of the best mines in the county having hopper and track scales, and the coal running over three screens. Improvements were
made last fall costing about $6,000, the tipple being remodeled, a new 100 ton track scale being put in, an addition to side tracks was made, and a large size screen put in. They have a nice office 16x28. The president is S.P. Maring; Vice-President, L. Olson; Supt., L Johnson; bookkeeper, Marie Forsen; engineer, Pearl Hollenbeck; pit boss, Ed Biggie; weigh boss, Martin
Swanson; salesman, Oscar Anderson.

"The Exline Coal Co. opened up about ten years ago, employing about 60 or 75 men in the busy season, producing about 125 tons a day, and doing a $30,000 business per year. They own about 20 acres of land and a 14-room boarding house. Their mine is up-to-date with hopper and track scales and other equipment. They sold and leased about 20 tents the past winter to families who could not get houses. They have an uptown office 16x30. The Pres. is Ed Johnson; Vice-Pres., Pete Lindahl; Supt. and Treas., C.A Sundeen; salesman, Axel Nelson; bookkeeper, Ernest Worley; engineer, John Hism; pit boss, Mark Amos; top boss, O.N. Sundeen.

"The Royal Block has been under the ownership of P.N. May for three years. It is a drift mine located two miles east. They have about 35 men and ship about two cars per day, all clean hand-picked coal."
