In Response To: Coal Mines near Exline, Ia (Robert A. Monroe)

The two publications which provide this information are: (1) W. M. "Bill" Heusinkveld's "The History of Coal Mining in Appanoose County, Iowa" (2007) and (2) "Underground Coal Mines of Centerville, Iowa and Vicinity" (1986) by Donald L. Koch, Iowa State Geologist, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, which includes a large map showing the known mine locations.
Heusinkveld writes: "Exline flourished with the development of the coal mining industry. Two mines dominated the economy, one on each end of town." (1) Iowa Block Coal Co. (East Mine) was located in the SW NE Section 32, T-68N, R-17W. It was sunk in 1904 and about 400 acres were mined from 1908 to 1938. It employed about 125 men. (2) Exline Coal Co. No. 1 and No. 2 (West Mine) was located in SE of Section 31, T-67N, R-17W. It operated under this name from 1903 to 1924. It employed about 70 men in the busy season.
There were also several small truck mines northwest of Exline - two in Caldwell Twp and five in Pleasant Twp. Also, there were four mines south of Exline very near Shoal Creek where it crosses the Iowa-Missouri border.
I believe you could purchase both of these books from the Appanoose County Historical and Coal Mining Museum in Centerville.
