I have certainly made progress. I located my father and grandmother in the 1910 census. At that time they were in Portland, living with a salesman named Ben K. Patheal. Leah was using the name Leah Beryl Patheal, and my father was listed as James Egbert Patheal. Birth dates, birth places, mother's parents, as well as my father's official middle name, all match. I don't have hight hopes for it, but I have written to the school districts in Portland and in San Jose, California to see if they have student records from the 1920's. I have sent a request to the Gallatin Co. Montana recorder to check contemporaneous birth, divorce, and marriage records for the time around my father's reported birth. Something odd happened back then, and there may have been a concerted effort to cover it up. In any event, I thank you all for your kindness.
