I found the following family in the 1860 Iowa Census:

Wapello County, Columbia Twp. handwritten page 78 or 666.
The P.O. Box is Eddyville
Date of enumeration is 9 July 1860
Line 24 537/544
Margaret Burgis age 50, female, b. MD cannot read.
John W. Burgis age 22, male, farm laborer b. IN
Samuel Burgis age 21, male, farm laborer b. IN.
The occupation of other households on this page is farmer. The previous family in on this page (CLARK) also seems to have spent some time in IN.
Also note that I cannot find the BURGESS family or any other possible derivation for this name in the 1850 census surname index for Wapello County, IA.
I also spent a considerable amount of time trying to find them in 1850 and 1840 in IN. So far I have not had any luck. There are a lot of Burgess families; 56 spread all over the state.
