The Madison Co. RootsWeb page is very good.
There is a listing of a marriage of John William Shepherd to Florence L. Gill on 15may1887.
They also have very good census records on theie site. I find no listing for your Shepherd families in the 1900 census.
On FamilySearch.com, the Mormon site, is an every name index of the 1880 census. I find no listing of your Shepherd families in either Madison Co., or Polk Co.
The earliest City Directory for Des Moines, is the 1866/67 Directory. It only lists head of household or employed people. I will check it
for George Shepherd on my next visit to the Des Moines Public Library. Birth records do not start until 1880 and then they are spotty.
