Not much to be found on your James so far. According to the 1856 census he was born in Ireland c.1810. Marriage records for their children reveals his wife Ellen's maiden name as Murray. Having lived in Washington township, they are most likely buried at the Temple Hill/Saint Peter's cemetery as there are a lot of McXXXX buried in it but eluded the WPA records. Also see in the 1880 census that Ellen had died by then and looks like he did so by the 1885 census.

There is a James McDermott born c.1804 Ireland living in Dubuque County but don't get the two confused, not the same person, at least I don't think so. This one married a Priscilla Lendman who died 1883 and he died 1877. I say that because the "1880" census for your James says he too was born c.1804 which I find odd.
