In Response To: Re: Kernan Children (Dick)

Dick-Thank you for your response. To answer some of your questions, I have in fact, located the James Kernan family in the 1880 census. They were living in Kingston, IL. at the time and I believe they moved to Oxford Junction shortly after the birth of their 2nd child, Edna (b.1879). I've combed thru the 1885 Iowa Census and found a James and Annie CURRAN in Oxford Junction. This couple had 3 children at the time: James, Editha (Edna?) and Harry. Despite the name misspellings, and some minor age discrepancies, it seems reasonable to think that this is probably my Kernan family. I would be interested to see an image of the original handwritten census form. I also have a copy of the 1895 Iowa census which you mentioned. In this record, James is listed as D (deceased), which is correct. And finally, the 4 Kernan children living in Elgin, IL with their Aunt May Mitchell in the 1900 census record are indeed my grandfather and his siblings. I have a copy of this record as well. I welcome all tidbits of info that I can find about this family, but my biggest hope would be to find some kind of record or mention of the deaths of the 2 boys (James G. and Harry) in Oxford Junction...maybe in church records (probably Presbyterian), or grave markers (although I understand this may not be possible). But I'll continue to try to find as much as I can until I've exhausted all of my options. Below is some of the vital information which I neglected to include in my last message:
James W. Kernan b. Mar. 15, 1851, Brooklyn NY d.Jan. 14, 1894 Davenport, IA (His parents were N. Irish, but records conflict as to whether they were immigrants or born in NY...there are no names for them.)
Annie Mitchell b. Canada West (Ontario) d. Feb. 23, 1896 Davenport, IA. (Her parents were Scottish immigrants who settled in DeKalb Co., IL.) Annie's sister, Mary (Aunty May) Mitchell raised the Kernan children after the deaths of James and Annie.
Annie and James were married in Cortland, IL (DeKalb Co) in 1875
Their children were:
James (Jimmy) G. Kernan -b. Feb. 12, 1876 Sycamore, IL d. Oct. 12, 1888 Oxford Junction, IA
Edna Mae Kernan -b. Nov. 6, 1879 Sycamore, IL d. Dec. 1, 1957 Elgin, IL
Harry Kernan -b.June 6, 1883 Oxford Junction, IA d. Oct. 10, 1888 Oxford Junction, IA
William Warren Kernan -b.Dec 28, 1885 Oxford Junction, IA d. Mar. 1966 Elgin, IL
Fredrick Harrison Kernan -b. Oct. 26, 1888 Oxford Junction d. Nov. 30, 1955 Redwood City, CA
Erwin Kernan (my grandfather) -b. Jan. 11, 1891 Davenport, IA d. June 28, 1976 Aledo, IL
I apologize for the length of this message, but am hopeful that by including the above info, someone might have a suggestion or knowledge of a record somewhere that will assist me in this search. Thank you again for your kind interest.
Donna
